Did I say 45 Things?

I meant I cooked 45 things... not quite. I did get the entire house overhauled on Friday and scooted into town for groceries, beer and also to unload a few bins of recycle.
Today, I decided I better get cooking if E. is going to bring his mom over tomorrow, and also Sean and Annette should arrive here after their wet hikes- to take me on an easy hike at Kokanee. Note I said "easy" and not "wet". It has rained here on and off all day, so I expect they hit a bit of dampness on their crawl up to Mount Dolly Varden ( named after the delicious trout). I couldn't reach them on their cell phone tonight, so I am hoping they made it back to base camp safe and sound. If they are no shows by three tomorrow, I'll be calling PEP!
Sean is good about packing a full backpack of supplies, so that is reassuring, however with the damp cool weather, they'll be freezing their wet sorry butts off tonight.

Oh, I guess you are wondering what I made today..and I never had the old camera in hand to blog it .

Here is the line-up:

That should hold the troops over. What do you think?

On a Side Note here:

[The Dinkus was secretly unloading his truck into the back door tonight in the pitch dark...More Windows, I suspect...but didn't he have ALL DAY to do this? He has his(read lazy) kid here with their fifty foot fifth wheeler and their inlaws or whomever with their fifty foot fifth wheeler, parked end to end under the cottonwood trees.(Heaven forbid if there is a wind storm!) They also have something like four or five English Bulldogs as pets. Here.

Yep, the Bull-Dog brigade was staring E. down this morning...him on the concrete patio and three of these big bull dogs on the lawn behind the hot-tub, giving him the "What-for!". Both Co-Co and Silk were barking their heads off on the balcony. Thank goodness I had them both tied up, but nearly killed myself tripping over the leashes to reign them back up the stairs before they were bull-doggy appetizers! Two of the dogs were easily shooed away, but Tia, the grand-mama of them, stood her ground and was trying to outstare E. Good thing he is bigger than the dogs.

He won.

The dogs stayed put, after Emil mentioned to the owners that we had two little dogs .

Ok. I have to go to bed now..I am pooped. GOOD NIGHT Everyone!

PS. I beat E. at Scrabble tonight, but he had to help me make my last word...GRAVY

Pretty good, since I started the game by picking up 5 "e's"

His best word was Rejoin tied into vent to make event.

V-A-C-A-T-I-O-N

E. started his holidays today...Yea, Yippee, Zowie-Wowie- Kapowie!
'bout time. Now I hope the phone doesn't keep ringing off the hook for work related problems. He needs a little R&R.
Well, about 45 things have happened since I last broadcasted to my blog world so I'll go back a few days.
RONDA WON!!!! Way to go girl! I don't know how she did it, but she foiled John somehow and got that calendar flipped over to September before he did...Plus she made him a special "Loser's T-shirt" LOL...Sorry John...this is way too funny The last item on the t-shirt says for John to check the "To-Do" list!
How is it coming along John??? hahahahahhhaaaahahhhahhhahhhhhhaaaaPhttt.. hahhhhahhahahh!
I love this girl!

On a more serious note now.

By now most everyone probably knows that Lu had a mild heart attack and it was lucky that Arlene was able to get him to the hospital where they looked after him and eventually sent him to Kelowna and then on to Vancouver for procedures. It now appears that he will undergo bypass surgery next week to remove a blockage and get him all fixed up. Our best wishes go out to him and A. and Eva, who is flying to Van to be there with him. I'll keep you posted.
Also, our other friend Al, had a mild heart attack this week, so our wishes for a quick recovery go out to him also.
Look after your hearts everyone...check out the Becel Heart Healthy pages or sign up for their newsletter...lots of info and recipes there.
Also, our deepest condolences go out to Greg and Terry. The funeral will be tomorrow at 3:00 in Proctor for Greg's 20 year old son who passed away suddenly, much to everyone's shock, especially Greg, who was just golfing with him last week.

Home Improvement Week at the Neighbours

Do you see what I see? The Dinkus is putting in his windows...after about ten years of living in a wooden tent, its about time..I hope the wood isn't too rotten to hold up those heavy Lowen Windows! Posted by HelloYep, we nearly fell right on our keaster when we took a walk to the beach and looked back..
Yep it is true, the dinkus is actually getting around to putting in his windows. This is almost remarkable. In the seven years since we've been here, they have come and lived in that wooden tent of a shack for a few days nearly every week of the entire spring and summer and fall and never seemed to have required windows. Yes, they have a couple of doors which were the source of interior light...when the doors were open. ( No electricity or water till last year, either) Very strange people indeed, but it is good to see some positive changes happening since we are the suckers living next door to them.Unfortuneately the improvements aren't apt to be noticed until they put some siding on or rebuild it or perhaps sell it. Imagine what it would be like to once again live next to normal people neighbours!

Zuccini Appetizers

Zuccini Appetizers..and easy to make! Posted by Hello
Just quarter(or more) your zuccinis lengthwise(no need to peel) and cut into bite-sized pieces about 2 inches long. Get out three bowls and in the first put a large scoop of flour ( you can add salt and pepper or lemon pepper and garlic salt).
In the second bowl crack an egg into it and stir it up with a quarter of a cup of milk or cream.
In the third bowl mix together a half cup of Parmesean and a half cup of fine breadcrumbs ( this will do two zucs, I'd guess)
Have ready a Cookie sheet sprayed with "Pam"
Procedure: Roll a couple of pieces of zuc in the flour mixture, then dip it into the egg, and then coat it with the breadcrumbs and place on the cookiesheet...(skin side to the pan)
Yes, you are more or less going to "bread" each piece of zuccini. Once they are all nicely crumbed and lying side by side on your cookie sheet, turn your oven on broil and place the cookie sheet under the broiler ( on the second rack level) . Keep an eye on them as they brown up fairly quickly. I then shut off the broiler and turn the oven on at 350* and finish cooking the bottoms of them for a couple of more minutes if they don't look quite done. Otherwise, you could take a fork and roll each one over and continue to broil them so the bottom side gets cooked...but that is quite a pain. Don't overcook them or they will get mushy. Serve while they are hot with your favourite dip or dressing. I like mine with Blue Cheese Dressing or Ranch Dressing.

Tough life being a dog around here! I am trying to teach them to "Bring Toy". So much for dog tricks."Blah blah blah- chew hell out of toy for maximum fun", says Co-Co! Posted by Hello

Another perfect example of nature...here yesterday and gone today..Did someone eat it??? Posted by Hello

My Queen of the Night bloomed last night and will probably open one more blossom tonight. Exquisite in form and perfectly detailed, I am transfixed by this bloom. The fragrance is pure heaven and fills the entire room. Posted by Hello

Who's the Boss for September???

Well, Ro- Is it you or John?
I probably told you about the race to see who gets the calendar turned over each month..they become the "Official Boss" for the month. Last month Ronda lost by virtue of a faulty lock on the front door. I haven't heard who it is for September!
Fun and Games eh?
I am the boss every month, for if I left it up to you know who, then we'd still be on January as far as calendars go. E. doesn't do calendars.

I've spent the better part of the morning being care giver to the dog buddies here. The night with the four of us in one bed was a little bit of a disaster..ie...no sleep hardly. Co-Co kept wanting to snuggle right next to the b*tch who wanted nothing to do with him. I already mentioned it to her that she need not get intimate, she just had to be friendly for a few days. She doesn't get it! Silk bunked in close to my tummy while Co-Co found a crevice behind my back. I was like the meat in the sandwhich..cold then cooking..Tonight we'll look at alternate arrangements..maybe both of them in the green room!

I revised my "To-DO" List, so it is now a Menu Planner. Anyone with XL can email me and I'll be happy to send it off to you.
I've been finding it more simple to have a guide written in front of my nose rather than relying on the old memory bank. This one gives a space for you to list what you have on hand, the groceries you need, what you can premake, space for a menu for 3 days and a list of potential things to cook as you think of them or find things in the freezer.
Looks like Annette and Sean will come by on Sunday after their hike to Idaho Peak. These pics show a fairly steep trail... so pack lots of water and gorp. We'll see if you are ready to hike the old growth forest at Kokanee.. I'll be rested and ready!:-)

E's buddy, John will be coming on Tuesday, so I better get cooking and get crackin if anyone is to be fed around here. Half the day is shot already. I can almost play Row, Row, Row Your Boat with C major chord accompaniament. How's that?

Rainy Night

T'was a goodmorning for getting things accomplished once the thunder and lightening subsided. E. started to fill the truck with garbage from behind our shed, so I finished loading more potentials for the dump. I said goodbye to the green Patio Chair Cushions, that served us well for more than ten years...and good-bye to the reminders of kid fun this summer...the hula-hoops! Both were far removed from their original perfect circles -signs of well used toys...Thanks Lynn -the kids had a ball learning how to swing it first around one wrist, then transfer it to the second wrist and keep it in motion without missing a beat. They both had it down pat by the end of vacation, even if the hoops were a little warped! Lets just say the back of the truck was full...five bucks and the dog even netted two cookies. Sheila is much appreciated for her kindness at the "Sanitary Landfill???- " ( the dump?) She always has a cookie for Silk ( she calls her "Sneezy")
I made it to Tim Hortons in plenty of time to meet Lynn and pick up my little charge for the week-end. Lynn and Val were waylayed after locking her keys in the trunk...even BCAA couldn't unlock it!
Good thing Bob was handy and came to her rescue.By 4:00 we had the pup's things loaded into my car, as well as a box of beautiful pears from Lynn, (much thanks) , then we had a coffee and snack at T.H's.
I loaded little Co-Co in with Silk;we said ten good-byes and I was off to see my old Uncle John from Salem Oregan. He is staying at my cousin Anns' which was on my way home.
Now, I hadn't really visited with any of them since last summer when Uncle John was here and him and cousins and other old uncle all came in two car-loads out to my house. It was good to visit with everyone once again. My Uncle is 90 years young, with a beautiful sense of humour and a wonderful memory of times gone by. His motto is : Make memories while you can, so you have something to talk about when you can't...
I retold my only memory of his mother...I remembered an old grandmother with this beautiful long silver braid. When she undid it, her hair fell to her waist and the big girl cousins got to brush and brush it for her.
When she died, I also remember being allowed to go into the living room and see her lying peacefully in her casket. I didn't retell that part, nor the part about her funeral procession that followed, with the casket held high somewhere above my head , and overflowing with flowers. Perhaps that was my first funeral. I know I was very young and it stuck in my head all these years.
We did chat about the happier moments that I spent at my aunt's farm in a typical Doukabour Village in Pass Creek..the white cat with pale blue eyes that was smart enough to open the latch on the door out of the living room, the gramaphone that needed to be cranked up in order to play, and the kitchen that was always warm and smelled of wonderful bread or pytahee baking in the oven. Then there was the root cellar- a giant trap door on the floor of the verandah with a ladder leading down to a cache of root vegetables and hundreds of jars of preserves of every colour.
The highlight of my visits were two fold...when my uncle becommed me to follow him to his teensy little community store and gave me a box of "Lucky Elephant" popcorn, and the other was to plunge into the giant feather mattress in one of the many bedrooms upstairs. Ann laughed her head off at the mattress thing - saying that by morning, with a wool quilt over you, you finally warmed up!
(Now, I remember that the tin pot-bellied stoves in each bedroom never got lit , no matter how freezing it seemed to get...and that explains why those huge farmhouses had so many chimneys , but with smoke only curling out of one! ) Central heating was confined to the kitchen!
So my visit was good and the dinner that Ann prepared, delicious- with homemade vegatable soup with fava beans and barley, fresh cucs and tomatoes out of the garden, fresh corn on the cob, and a Russian (also Polish) specialty called Nalesniki- a kind of crepe filled with dry cottage cheese mixed with eggs, then baked with cream poured over-top. They were served with melted butter and organic yogurt over top..Pretty damn tasty. Made me wish I hadn't of snacked at T.H's!
Not to fear, she loaded me up with a selection of everything we had eaten, plus fresh peaches from their tree. With the pears from Lynn's tree, I'll be in fruit heaven for the next few weeks! I think I'll be doing a little canning! Thanks everyone for the gifts of food!
I think I followed the path of the storm all the way home, seeing hail piled up on the roadside, downed tree branches on our road, and hail still heaped near the shrubs in our yard. I made it home just at dark and just as the mist was setting in on the road into our house. Good thing I wasn't any later ,when the roar of the monsoons came once again.
Well the dogs have settled down, now that Silk has made it clear that her bed in the computer room is off limits, as is the hunk of rawhide that lies next to her nose. Co-Co, I think has found a warm spot near E. and tonight will tell how well we all sleep on one bed...good thing it is a king-sized one! Good Night all...

Happy Anniversary Eva and Dave, and Virginia and Corey

Anniversary time and I missed them all, but it is never too late to say "Happy Anniversary!" Also a big Happy Birthday to little K! All of one year old and as cute as ever. Certainly glad we got to visit with all the neices and nephews and their little kidlets this year!
Time is going by so fast here, that I can hardly believe it.
4 more days and E will be on vacation...Yippee. His stress level has been pretty high these past few weeks, and when he sat down and thought about the last time he had time off, aside from his week with John in PG, it has been at about 8 months..so to say the least, he is ready.
We'll try to get some of the last building touches finished up on the house. First of all, we need a handrail up to the suite, and then crown molding in the old parts, then a few pieces of trim, and curtain rods and that will be about it.
The weather prediction is for rain over the next few days, so with any luck, I'll be able to finish sewing the draperies for my bedroom.
Also we want to bring Annie home for the long weekend, and as well, I have been designated as the care giver for Co-Co while Lynn and Bob are off to a wedding over hte long week-end!
I already had a dream last night that first the dog, then Lynn got stuck in the mud. Luckily they both swam to freedom as it was apparent that I wasn't plunging in.
No shortage of fun around here over the week-end!
On Saturday, I made Antipasto- the Italian appetizer that probably every human from Trail recognizes. It is a delicious combo of Olives, mushrooms, pickles, anchovies, tuna, beans, peppers and tomato sauces that combined and canned up make a delicious appetizer when guests unexpectedly arrive. Only thing is that over the years it has become increasingly expensive to make, so one becomes judicious about giving it away! However, Sunday was a perfect day to gift three jars of it to the movers...the movers of the gift that was bestowed upon us , quite unexpectedly, but with open arms... A PIANO!
How about that?
To say the least it was heavier than hell, but it is a fixture in my bedroom now and may be with us for some time. Thanks to the three saints for delivery and placement and the"GIFT". Now if I could wake up being a piano player..that would be beautiful! I'll be looking for online lessons or if anyone is so talented they can drop by and teach me some basic Piano techniques. So far I can make some pleasant sounds using all ten fingers. This is good for Osteo- Arthritis in the finger joints at the very least.
The kids will be thrilled if it is still here when they next come for a visit.
I better get moving, as the day is slipping by and we have sunshine to boot. My sciatica nerve was giving me hell all last week, but today it feels much better, so I can be back to normal somewhat. Walking and standing were the worst.Don't get it!
I'll put the second coat of paint on the metal round picnic table we brought from the lake house. I am using Trenmclad...but E bought the high-gloss stuff...very glossy indeed! I think I'll art deco it up with some splashes of yellow and red..Save the need for a tablecloth!
PS. I hope C.and J. find the culprit who stole their golf clubs out of their garage last night..that is such a shame...specially since they were those beautiful Calloways...or was it Pings???

Kootenay Lake Ferry Schedule

Marine Branch - Kootenay Lake Ferry Schedule
Lynn was looking for this schedule for the Kootenay Lake ferry. Note that the summer schedule only runs until Labour Day.Also there is still a detour around the mudslide at Kuskanux, so add some time onto your trip. From Creston, you need at least 1 hour and fifteen minutes. Not many people make it in under an hour, so to try it will probably result in disappointment! I had a heck of a time finding this link. It used to be on the KBS Radio Station site, but has since moved. I've added it under my "Linkies"

Nu-Life Nutrition
E has been using this product called "To diet for" as a nutritional, low carb, low fat drink while he is on the road. He finds it fills him up and holds him over. All you need is one scoop added to milk or your "preferred" beverage. This product is also suitable for diabetics as it contains no sugars.
